In caso di maltempo , o se un forte vento gli impediva di dipingere fuori , van gogh dipingeva spesso nature morte . potrebbe aver avuto l'idea di dipingere questo granchio dopo aver visto le stampe giapponesi dello stesso soggetto . Ha dedicato uno studio attento all'effetto della luce e dell'ombra sul crab’s conchiglia , rappresenta l'ombreggiatura come in un disegno , con trattini corti . Dipinto in cosa – per lui – era un dettaglio considerevole , il granchio sembra muoversi in un mare verde intenso di pennellate .
